Pop In The City Berlin at Ratatouille: A Taste of German Traditions

Coffee, cake and meaningful connections: a wonderful day of discovery and shared experiences at Ratatouille Berlin.

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, Berlin came alive with Pop In The City, a unique urban adventure bringing women together to explore the German capital through exciting challenges, unexpected encounters and memorable experiences.

And among the many stops along the way, a special experience was waiting for them at Ratatouille Berlin!

Throughout the day, our cooking studio welcomed between 150 and 250 French-speaking participants from France, Belgium and Switzerland.

Each group spent around twenty minutes discovering a tradition deeply rooted in German culture: Kaffee und Kuchen, literally meaning “coffee and cake.”

A delicious little break filled with culture, conversation and human connection, right in the middle of an adventure-packed day!

Kaffee und Kuchen: More Than Just Coffee and Cake

In Germany, sharing a cup of coffee and a slice of cake is much more than a simple afternoon treat.

Known as Kaffee und Kuchen, this cherished tradition brings family and friends together around a table to talk, laugh, share stories and simply enjoy each other’s company.

It’s a moment to slow down, reconnect and appreciate life’s simple pleasures.

And that’s exactly what we wanted the Pop In The City participants to experience.

Because behind a cup of coffee and a slice of cake lies something special: the joy of coming together and turning an ordinary moment into a shared memory.

A philosophy that feels very much at home at Ratatouille.

Carrot Cake: A Sweet Story That Goes Back Centuries

To bring this German tradition to life, we chose to highlight a cake with a surprisingly fascinating history: carrot cake, known in German as Karottenkuchen.

Today, many people immediately associate carrot cake with the United States, where it has become a beloved classic in cafés and bakeries.

But its story reaches much further back, with roots in European culinary traditions.

Its history is often linked to medieval Europe, when sugar was expensive and beyond the reach of many households.

People turned to naturally sweet ingredients to add flavour and sweetness to their recipes.

Carrots, with their naturally sweet taste, offered a practical alternative.

Over the centuries, carrot-based desserts developed across Europe, including in Switzerland and German-speaking regions, eventually evolving into the cakes we know today.

Although the exact origins of modern carrot cake remain debated, its history tells a fascinating story of culinary creativity, adaptation and traditions passed down through generations.

A simple cake with a story that crosses centuries, cultures and borders.

Twenty Minutes to Discover, Connect and Share

As part of the Pop In The City adventure, each group had approximately twenty minutes to enjoy their experience at Ratatouille.

Twenty minutes to step away from the excitement of Berlin’s busy streets.

Twenty minutes to discover a local tradition.

Twenty minutes to learn how a simple cake can tell a story stretching back centuries.

But most importantly, twenty minutes to experience something that brings people together everywhere: the pleasure of sharing.

Throughout the day, Ratatouille was filled with smiles, conversations, curiosity and wonderful energy.

Women from different countries, with different backgrounds and stories, came together through a shared desire to discover something new and enjoy the moment.

A Day Full of Smiles, Encounters and Beautiful Memories

Welcoming so many participants throughout the day was an exciting and joyful experience for the entire Ratatouille team.

What will stay with us most are the smiles, the spontaneous conversations, the curiosity and the enthusiasm that filled our space with every new group.

It was also a wonderful reminder of something we strongly believe in at Ratatouille:

Food is never just about recipes.

It’s about discovering cultures, understanding traditions, exchanging stories and creating connections that go far beyond the kitchen.

A huge thank you to Pop In The City for bringing this fantastic adventure to Berlin, and to every participant who stopped by to share a little part of their day with us.

You brought incredible energy into Ratatouille!

And while we had the pleasure of introducing you to a German tradition, you gave us something equally special in return: wonderful moments of connection, laughter and shared joy.

Because sometimes, the most beautiful memories begin with something as simple as gathering around a table.
